Automotive Innovation: What's Next?

Wednesday, November 15, 2023 (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM) (PST)

Description

Auto & Tech: Ready for Round Two?

The automotive business has been continuously innovating since Carl Benz patented his three-wheeled “motor car” in 1886.  But about a decade ago, Silicon Valley discovered this $3T global market, deeming it ripe for disruption.

The traditional OEMs and their suppliers were considered dinosaurs, too slow to respond to new products and concepts being delivered by Tesla, Google, and (as was rumored at the time) Apple.

The key initiatives known as ACES (Automated, Connected, Electric, Shared) seemed to play straight into the technology industry’s hands, but its engineers were soon stymied by the immense challenges of building out a global supply chain, and making products that were expected to last two decades in all environmental conditions with minimal downtime.

  • Have the OEMs vanquished our tech industry?
  • What have the two sides learned from each other?
  • Who is capturing the most value in mobility transactions right now, and who will do so in the future?
  • Will we ever see a Google or Apple car?
  • What happened to “Data is the new Oil” in automotive, where some pundits were predicting free cars in return for our data?
  • And now, with the emergence of LLMs (Large Language Models), will the value capture “rivalry” with Silicon Valley be reawakened?

These themes and more will be examined in a conversation between two veterans that understand both Silicon Valley and the traditional automotive industry.

Speakers

Sven Beiker
Founder and Managing Director
Silicon Valley Mobility, LLC

Sven Beiker began his career as an engineer for BMW in Munich, Germany, before finding his way to Silicon Valley by transferring to the BMW Technology Office in Mountain View.  Later, he became Executive Director for the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford during the pivotal timeframe when the first “ACES” initiatives emerged.  After a stint at McKinsey, Sven now runs his own consultancy, Silicon Valley Mobility, LLC, while continuing to lecture at Stanford Business School on automotive strategy.  He recently released his first book, “The Mobility Diaries”, which reviews over 50 years of automotive innovation.

Steffen Bartschat
CEO and Founder
Hill88

Steffen Bartschat is GABA’s industry expert on Innovation. Steffen has a technical background in consumer technology, and for the past decade has built a consulting business (Hill88) that helps large corporates improve their innovation strategies and enables non-local startups expand their business development footprint into the US. From 2012 – 2018 he helped $20B tier-one supplier Faurecia (now Forvia) establish and expand its connections to the Silicon Valley ecosystem, transforming the company from a supplier of materials to higher margin technology solutions.

Facilitator

Philip Reinckens
Former CEO of
Spin
GABA Industry Expert on Mobility

The event will be facilitated by Philip Reinckens, GABA’s industry expert on Mobility. Until recently, Philip was the CEO of Spin and turned around a highly unprofitable micromobility business before selling it to Bird last month.  Before that, he held executive positions at TIER Mobility in Europe.
