The Air We Breathe

Thursday, September 29, 2022 (6:00 PM - 8:30 PM) (PDT)

Description

Do you know the air quality right where you are? Temperature is easy. We feel it when it's too hot or cold. Humidity too. However, we often do not notice harmful air quality unless it's really awful and the sky turns orange. Because our life depends on the air we breathe, we must take action on air quality. To start with, we can measure and track air quality right where we are. The resulting pollution awareness will have a significant impact on personal action and community efforts to improve air quality.

Two universities in Europe, one in Magdeburg, Germany, and one in Skopje, North Macedonia, teamed up to build the CleanBREATHE project – the goal being to make air pollution more granularly visible based on mobile crowdsensing. This research project will design solutions to raise awareness of contaminated air and stimulate immediate behavioral changes in the population. The research project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

The project lead Prof. Dr. Michael A. Herzog will present the CleanBREATHE project and their plans to make low-cost air quality sensors available to everyone.  For the panel discussion, he will be joined by Californian based experts Davina Hurst (Board Member - Governor Gavin Newsom Appointee and Senate Confirmed; California Air Resources Board) and Juan Aguilera, Director of Translational Environmental and Climate Health (Sean N. Parker Center for Allergy & Asthma Research at Stanford University).

The event will begin with a welcome by the German Consul General Oliver Schrammfollowed by a short presentation of SAPs Carbon Data Network by Yaad OrenHead of SAP Innovation Center Network and Member of GABA Board of Directors.

The German Consulate General, San Francisco kindly supported this event. GABA also thanks SAP Labs in Palo Alto for hosting the event as well as the networking before and after.
